Following 500 miles of headwinds, it appears we can now look forward to the last 235 miles of headwinds, for a change. Developing the skills to keep the ship moving well to windward is an essential part of any sailor’s repertoire, and all the more important on classic sail training vessels, which rarely match modern racing sailboats for windward ability. Our crew have become very good at steering so as to neither pinch (sail too close to the wind, losing speed), nor waste potential gains to weather by sailing too far down. And that's good, but enough, already.
