Coastal Skiller Expeditions
Students aged 13+ that express an interest in exploring life at sea are candidates for this programme, which occurs during mid-term school vacations and summer months. During the expedition, single sex or mixed students groups spend a minimum of 5 days at sea including an overnight circumnavigation of Bermuda. Student crew will participate in a blend of traditional sail training and targeted skill building activities. Targeted learning objectives focus on either self confidence, teamwork and leadership development or an introduction to maritime vocations. Whilst many applicants may have had previous sailing experience this is NOT a prerequisite.
Teambuilding, Leadership & Personal Development
Through participation in daily routines such as sail and line handling, navigation, manning the helm, standing watch and cleaning, student crew will be challenged to achieve things they didn’t believe themselves capable of. In doing so they will improve communication skills, learn what it takes to motivate and lead a team and step outside their comfort zone. Leadership, initiative, and responsibility even in the face of adversity, are the traits we hope to see in all young Bermudians, yet how often do we give them the chance to actually rise to the challenge? Aboard Spirit of Bermuda students practice living these values.
Introduction To Marine Occupations
Daily instruction provided by Spirit of Bermuda’s professional crew will allow participants to explore some of the careers available in the maritime industry. Upon boarding student crew will select one of the following aspects of shipboard functioning to focus on throughout their voyage: navigation, seamanship, engineering and hospitality. Crewmembers will assess each student and provide individualised feedback in the areas of technical knowledge and skill development along with recommendations for the next steps for pursuing a career in their chosen field.
