Become a Volunteer
The Spirit programme attracts a large number of volunteers who find the experience very rewarding, but we always need more! Supplementing our programmes is a network of community members who donate time and resources to enhance the experience of students of all ages aboard the Spirit of Bermuda. Positive adult role models are a critical part of the layered mentoring philosophy central to the programme’s design. The position of watch leader requires a high degree of responsibility and maturity. Watch leaders are responsible for supervising student crew groups of up to 7 students throughout the entirety of their voyage experience. Spirit of Bermuda currently has two types of watch leader opportunities: professional and volunteer.
Community Watch Leaders (Volunteer)
Community members, who are willing to commit to participating in at least one 5-day voyage within the following 12-month period can receive watch leader training. Once trained these individuals are eligible to act as volunteer watch leaders aboard Spirit for our local voyages and participate in overseas voyages at a discounted rate.
The Foundation runs a series of watch leader orientation days through out the year, which provide an introduction to technical sailing skills, daily routines aboard Spirit and the management of student groups. After completing the orientation, candidates must complete a 5-day voyage on Spirit as the understudy of an experienced, professional watch leader.

Other Volunteer Opportunities
If you are unable to commit the time to become a watch leader, there are plenty of other opportunities available to help support the Foundation. These include working in the office, helping out at fundraising events and public open houses alongside the dock and working on day charters.
