Rock star Heather Nova officially launched a new song for the Bermuda Sloop Foundation yesterday in a bid to raise awareness of the youth sailing project.

The singer/songwriter hopes her song, Bermuda Sloop, will help the organisation raise the extra cash it needs to get the project afloat. She said: “I wanted to give my support to this project because it’s such a wonderful opportunity for our youth.

“It’s so important that our youth get a sense of self-esteem and going to sea can really do that. It will really be an exciting learning experience.

“My song is just a simple song that I hope conjures up the spirit of going to sea and also a sense of the fact that this is part of our history as Bermudians.”
The foundation has already raised $4 million of the $5.3million required to bring the rigged schooner, currently under construction in Maine, to the island.

And it is hoped that Heather’s song will help boost the fundraising effort.
The schooner will ultimately be used as a floating classroom giving the schoolchildren the chance to learn about the sea and their marine heritage first hand.

A male Bermudian singer is still being sought to perform on the final version of the song.

The chorus of the song attempts to sum up the spirit of the project: “We’ll be sailing to get there/Sailing to come back home/Sailing, sailing/Together we can learn to live as one”.
