(News from 2005-01-19 Edition)

Bermuda’s earliest boats were built out of cedar, and now the Bermuda Sloop Foundation (BSF) has received a donation of 33 logs of Bermuda cedar to be used on their vessel.

The cedar, valued at more than $100,000, will be used on the vessel’s transom, internal doors and frames, internal panelling and trim, binnacle, wheel. The sloop will provide hands-on training in sailing and life skills for young Bermudians.

Off cuts of the cedar will be crafted into paperweights, half models, bases and even the sawdust will be used in sachets. The 140 sponsors of the BSF to date will be recognized on one of the main cedar panels in the aft section of the vessel.

The Bermuda Sloop Foundation thanks the following people who donated the Bermuda Cedar: Graham Gibbons, Mr. & Mrs. Douglas Shirley, Scott King and Beryl Brown, Jeffrey Sterling, William Kempe, Colin Selley, Department of Parks, Hollis/Outerbridge/Clendenen Trust, Mrs. Harry Cox and family, Mr. & Mrs. Rick Spurling as well as Gordon and Tim Burland and David Goodwin for donating their time. Bermuda Forwarders, Bermuda Container Line, Bermuda Pest Control and BCM McAlpine Ltd. also donated their services.
