A day that captured a spirit of togetherness
By Dan Jones
Crowds flocked to the Spirit of Bermuda homecoming in their droves.
Albuoy's Point was transformed into a sea of camcorders and digital cameras, as the graceful schooner wound her way into busy Hamilton harbour – trailed by a welcoming flotilla of more than 20 colourful pleasure cruisers – just after 1.30 p.m. on Saturday.
As the sun blazed down, music played and the crew left the boat one-by-one to rapturous applause, bystanders were unanimous in their praise for the Island's first sail training vessel, now based at Dockyard. Katrina Caines, 42, from Warwick, said: "This is such a wonderful day. I've watched it come all the way down North Shore. I know our kids are going to be able to benefit from the Spirit of Bermuda."
Molly and Rolf Luthi were at the ceremony with grandchildren Chloe and Abby Powell. "We've got two future sailors here with us," said Molly, pointing to the two youngsters. "This will be a wonderful benefit for the youth and will bring everyone together." Tourist Brian Pogson, from York, England, said: "The boat is beautiful."
Linda Foggo, from Sandys, said she knew the parents of two student crew members. "This is about the spirit of joining together."
Entertainment was provided by the Bermuda Islands Pipe Band, Somerset Brigade Band, Heather Nova, Shine Hayward and a selection of schools.
