5 day 'Bermuda Spirit' Learning Expedition
Serving Middle School Yr 3 or Senior 1/2

The 5 Day "Bermuda Spirit" voyage is a one-off voyage and the third stage of the Public School Aquatics Programme where young Bermudians discover, learn, develop and connect new skills and habits on the path to self-reliance, self-esteem and teamwork, i.e., 'Learn to Swim' as a Primary School student AND using the greater water wisely as a Middle School Year 1 student (age 11 yrs), Waterwise Sailing Expedition (Optimist Dinghy-based).

Immersed in an organised, learning community aboard purpose-built 118' S/T/S SPIRIT OF BERMUDA, M3 students (13/14 yrs) engage in an age-appropriate 5 Day Voyage around coastal Bermuda. The guiding question is "Where am I on the planet?", i.e., where the students in watches of seven explore hands-on in time and space by connecting:

• geography/geology
• oceangraphy/atmospheric science
• history/culture

Learning and development aboard stv SPIRIT OF BERMUDA is based on the Design Principles of the top performing, reform education model of Expeditionary Learning Outward Bound and the behavioural teen benchmarks and tools of the "7 habits of Highly Effective Teens". ‘Skiller’ Programme Multi-Year (Extra-Curricular) 14-20 Years

Following an intro 5 day voyage (residential), teams (split U16 & 16+) share purpose-built s/t/v SPIRIT OF BERMUDA during extra-curricular breaks over several years including longer overseas participation (16+) in youth race/rallies and ambassadorial missions for Bermuda and her businesses.

2007- East coast, US/Canada
2008- Eastern Caribbean (tentative)
2009- UK, Holland, France, Portugal, Spain

Student Crew will be under command of world class professional crew, lead Capt. Chris Blake OBE, chosen for their qualifications as mariners and mentors.

• Progressive, periodic voyages over several years including summers overseas.
• After a grace period, every trainee must adopt a technical skill area:
• Electronics/Telecommunications/Computer Network Servicing
• Engines/Machinery Automotive Mechanics
• Cooking/Baking/Culinary Arts/Food & Nutrition/Galley Supervision
• Wood, metal & composite working

Following Bermuda College and National Training Board (NTB) pathways and certification milestones.

• Personal Log Book and confidential behaviour-driven measurement over time
• Tuition-based ($125.00 per day) with need-based bursary programme

SKILLER Young Adult Programme

Programme objective is to accelerate the focus and development of the late teen in order that he/she is on the path to becoming a positive force in their own life both in terms of resiliency and skills. Programme grows habits and skills in two 5 Day Voyages culminating in a round trip voyage, May 10-25th, 2006, to participate in the Tallships Challenge in Charleston, South Carolina (check www.sailtraining.org).  After first 5 day voyage, the crew will select three watch leaders for the next voyage from the student crew for whom there is no tuition.

Milestone Goals

• Attend 7 Habits for Associates (Crew) Training
• Attend 90% of school classes or be an employee in good standing
• Attend school test or exam prep or review sessions
• Select technical skill area and pursue certification (Mar/07)
• Graduate High School or Achieve Graduate Examination Diploma by May, 2007
• Reflection & composition of Personal Mission Statement & Curriculum Vita (CV)
• Plan & execute education and/or vocation plan for Sept, 2007

Cost

$3,125.00 with extensive (normal max 75%) need-based bursary available
Payable in advance of each voyage
